"Just Wear Blue " tomorrow in honor of Elizabeth Edwards
Hi, neighbors!

As you probably know, Elizabeth Edwards' funeral is tomorrow, and some particularly loud and hateful out-of-towners have been making a lot of noise about their plans to protest the funeral, to gain attention for their particular brand of political agenda. Some friends of mine are putting together a grassroots event called Just Wear Blue to bring the attention back to Edwards' positive legacy in North Carolina, the loving memories that many of us have of her, and sympathy with her mourning family.

The plan is for as many NC residents as possible to wear blue tomorrow, in honor of Elizabeth's UNC roots. We also want as many people as can make it to attend the funeral at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in downtown Raleigh, dressed in blue, to provide a "human barrier" between the mourners and the protesters and protect the family as much as possible from being screamed at.

If you can't wear blue, or if you just want to go the extra mile, we'd also love to see locals' lj, facebook and twitter icons and profile pics turn blue for the day, to show solidarity online as well as on the street.

Thanks so much for helping us out. If you're interested and want to get involved, please spread the word as widely as possible. Tell your friends!

Has anyone been on New Years Eve before? if so, what do they do that's cool and unique? and how far is it from where the acorn thing drops in Raleigh? (the farther the better!)

we're apparently going there tonight and I don't relish the thought of being in a sports bar (not a fan of any NC teams either) and so far from home (Chapel Hill) on NYE that i'll have to drive amongst all the drunks. i've lived in NC for almost 3 years and have avoided going into Raleigh as much as humanly possible.

thanks!

newcomers to raleigh!
Hey!

So I'm obviously new to the community...I'm from the Atlanta area, and a lady friend of mine and I decided to take a trip to somewhere we've never been before, and we settled on Raleigh, NC!

We'll only be there for a couple days, and I was hoping to get some insight on some of the must-do/see places and activities this time of year from any of y'all locals...also, where are the best places to eat? (on a budget, of course)!

Any help would be very, very greatly appreciated!  I've never been before, and neither has she, so we're both looking for some new experiences!  We both LOVE the outdoors, but at the same time we both love to party and have a good time.

So, whatcha got for me?  :)  Thanks so much in advance!

And to return the favor, if any of you are planning on traveling to Athens or Atlanta, Georgia...I'll answer anything you want to know!  Again...thanks so so so very much!  :)

bed and breakfast, cottage? something?
Hello fellow north carolinans or whatever we are supposed to call ourselves.
I need a little assistance.
My mother and father are planning to drive down to raleigh the second week in Jan to spend some time with myself and my family. (3 small children all under 5 and my husband and I) We only see eachother once a year and this year they cant make it all the way to my home in Asheville so raleigh seems to be halfway. The issue im having is that i cant seem to find a cottage or cabin rental place online, for anything close by. We would like to stay in a rental like that, because its private, nice, and big enough for a large family to celebrate the holidays you know? Id rather not pile us into a hotel room. If anyone can recommend anything that would be great im having major issues finding anything at all online.
cheaper is better as long as cheaper doesnt mean we have to camp outside or be bug infested :)
also needs to be child and  baby friendly. dog friendly is a huge plus as well.
thanks!

Moving to NC From Michigan - Need your Guidance
Hello, my name is Adam Twork, 26, and a current resident of Grand Rapids, MI.

Because of the horrible economic downturn we have here, coupled with the miserable weather and the ever-worsening mortgage crisis here in Michigan, I am planning on moving South. I've lived here all my life, and I feel like the majority of my potential could be better discovered elsewhere. Greener pastures and all that.

I've been reading those "Best places to live" guides that have been published in massive dictionary-sized volumes that help you compare the top several hundred places to live in the US based on statistical data compiled over the last couple census's worth of data.

While these books have been incredibly helpful in helping me narrow down the options, I don't have any sort of feeling either which way about my final decision. I'm leaning on heading for the Raleigh area, but that's based solely on statistical trends reported in the books and magazines I've read. I need something a little more subjective and so I'm writing here to ask for your opinion.

I'm looking to start a conversation and hopefully build a few connections for when I move down. I have lots of questions and am eager to find someone willing to answer them.

Are you a recent transplant from another state? I hear Raleigh is one of the fastest growing cities in the US because of all the northerners moving there. If you are, I'd love to hear from you and learn of your experiences.

My plan is to leave some time in early October. I'll be loading up my car with clothes and a computer and hitting the road.

If I were to move to anywhere within NC, what would I have to be sure to cover before I made the move? Are there deadlines for driver's license applications, or this mysterious car certification I hear about?

I'm hoping to be able to ask you these questions and many others. Let's chat?

My email is atwork(at)gmail.com

I really appreciate your thoughts,

Adam Twork
